ATEST Report Outlines Recommendations for Comprehensive Immigration Reform to Combat Modern Day Slavery

March 3, 2013

Human trafficking and immigration are inextricably linked. Current immigration protections for trafficked individuals in the United States - once they are identified - are inadequate and many victims remain in the shadows too terrified to come forward to seek justice. Moreover, current protections and policies often result in workers who lawfully enter the U.S. being vulnerable to human trafficking.

The Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking (ATEST) has put forth new recommendations and proposed statutory language to effectively address comprehensive immigration reform as it strengthens the fight to end human trafficking in our generation. Topics include:

  • Ensuring that individuals trafficked in the United States are eligible for T-visas despite having left the U.S.
  • Providing flexibility to victims of human trafficking to cooperate with law enforcement
  • Strengthening regulation of foreign labor recruiters in the U.S. and abroad to prevent trafficking
